Literature Text

The pilot light is burning.

Replaying the interview, I hear your smile.
There is a subtlety of sound I can't quite place.
It adds a definition, recognition that this
is you. This is something that cannot be misplaced.

Over the summer we ran from each other like
frightened animals who had lost their senses.
We were in heat, but could we tell a lover from
a hunter? Is there any difference? Didn't we
just want to survive?

90 degrees Fahrenheit refused to let go of its
grip on the town. Everywhere else was gold
and we were still green. School started with
traffic and helicopter noise hanging in the humid air,
and we hated every second of it.

The troops deployed and stopped
the noise. Our nervousness had
left us. There was no contact for fear
of amplifying already abundant heat.

I was assigned an interview with
someone from a culture other than my own.
I chose you, so I could make you laugh, so
we would smile at my stutter echoing through
the recorder as we replayed the material.

It dropped to 12 degrees Celsius when
you left, taking the Mediterranean warmth
with you.

The pilot light is burning over your voice.

It is wanting of your subtlety of sound.
"Tu me manques" (You are missing to me)

For a very dear friend who moved away for work, and took his Mediterranean sun with him.

Does the poem relay clearly and efficiently the emotion it contains?
Is the metaphor and use of heat as an image effective?

Beautifully poignant. Good writing moves me - it makes me see pictures of things, places, people that I can relate to. Yours did all of this and more.
