I.

When you are born they will lay you on a magazine cover
and wonder why your face is not the face beneath you yet.

II.

There is a woman set high
above traffic,
above exhaust,

and the man beside you wonders why
your face is not the face above you.

III.

Your mother wonders why her face is not the face
in front of her any longer.
She wonders when you will become her.

IV.

You try to leave your face behind you,
and wonder why you're running in place.
